Tool: Porter-Cable PC700D 7 Amp 1/2-Inch Variable Speed Drill
Even in this poor economy, contractors need new tools. I needed a 1/2″ drill for my second home and chose the Porter-Cable PC700D, mostly because of it’s price but also because of my previous experience with Porter-Cable.
Owning a fixer-upper home, 2500 miles away from my workshop is a challenge. On one hand, I am lucky to have 2 or more of some tools. As I rely on my tools to make a living, I simply cannot ship one of each to that far-away place and needed to purchase some tools I already own including this 1/2″ drill.
Pulling wires for new electrical requires the power of a corded drill and this Porter-Cable 7.0 amp drill has it! Read more »

Well, this may be the first ‘tool’ on this site that I made. A jig is certainly a tool and this one, though slapped together in 1997 is still put to use on site. Yesterday I used this to hinge some closet doors and it works like a charm.

Thought I’d throw this handy device on toolboxblog.com today since it’s served as a tool in my arsenal for more than a decade and still in use today. Read more »

Admittedly, I own a select few inherited tools that I have no experience with. Here’s an antique Starrett tool that has me wondering: What is it?
While cleaning my shop this week after using the destructive, chip throwing “Lancelot“, I found this tool on my top shelf (yes, unfortunately, wood chips covered everything, reinforcing the notion of using my “assembly table” for assembly only.)
Can I assume since it’s Starrett that it’s for measuring? Sure, it’s got a rubber wheel that when rolled, turns a dial that is labelled from 0-100 with inexplicably odd numbers at each mark around the dial: 19,28,37,46, 55… - I see a pattern here.
